Typical syllabus for the Novice Pupil

Please find below a suggested order of what to teach.  These are split into three groups and should be used only as a guide.  It is not always possible to teach everything in the order you would like, as this sometimes depends on the area in which you are teaching in. The list does not include all Pass Plus modules. 

The Basics 

1.      Cockpit Drill

2.      Moving off safely, Steering Accurately, Normal Stopping

3.      Gear Changing, Clutch Control (level & uphill)

4.        Approach to turn left & right                 (Turn & emerge left, Turn & emerge right could be considered)

5.      Emerging left & right

6.      Hill starts (up & down)

7.      Crossroads 

The Intermediate 

8.      Crossroads Traffic light controlled

9.      Roundabouts

10.  Emergency Stop & Effective use of mirrors

11.  Reversing in a straight line

12.  Turn the car in the road

13.  Reversing to the left

 The Experienced 

14.  Reverse Parking

15.  Pedestrian crossings & Correct use of signals

16.  Meeting traffic

17.  Crossing traffic

18.  Complex junctions

19.  High speed, Dual carriageways & Overtaking

20.  Country lanes & Overtaking

21.  Traffic light controlled Roundabouts

22.  One-way systems

23.  Awareness & planning, Hazards Assessing potential risk development

24.  Developing visual search skills & Signs

25.  Reversing to the right

Note: Roundabouts are normally introduced at the ‘Experienced’ stage however with the increasing number of roundabout it may be advisable to start sooner.  More complex and busier roundabouts would still be dealt with later.
